01In short
- No accounts or sign-up; we run no server and keep no personal data.
- No ads, analytics, tracking pixels or cookies.
- Your preferences stay in your own browser (localStorage) and are never sent to us.
- Comments and feedback are written publicly on GitHub.
02Stored in your browser
The following stay on your device, in your browser’s local storage, and are never sent to any server:
- your nickname and chosen avatar
- your reading history, streak, points and badges
- the stories you save, like and repost to your profile, with your notes
- followed topics, and hidden stories, sources and topics
- your city, theme, text size, night vision and notification settings
You can export or delete all of it from Settings. Clearing your browser data also removes it.
03Location
If you choose “Use my location”, your browser asks for permission. Your location is used only on your device for the sky calculations, stored rounded to two decimals (about 1 km) and never sent anywhere.
04Notifications
If you turn notifications on, your browser asks for permission. While the site is open, your browser itself shows new important stories; there is no notification server or sign-up.
05Third parties your browser connects to
When you open a page, your browser loads parts of it from these services, which can see your IP address and browser details; their own privacy policies apply:
- GitHub Pages, which hosts the site (GitHub keeps access logs).
- News sources (NASA, ESA, ESO and others): story images load straight from their servers, without a referrer.
- NASA SDO for the Sun pictures; wheretheiss.at for the ISS position when CelesTrak data is missing.
- giscus and GitHub, only on story pages with comments, and with your GitHub account if you sign in.
Share buttons (X, WhatsApp, Telegram) and the Google Calendar link open only when you click them. “Listen” uses your browser’s own speech engine; some browsers use a cloud service for it.
06When the site is built
The site is rebuilt automatically every three hours on GitHub Actions. Only public news feeds and data from NASA, NOAA, JPL and The Space Devs are read.
For summaries, only the public text of the stories is sent to AI services (Google Gemini, Groq or GitHub Models), and headlines to MyMemory for machine translation. No reader data goes to these services.
07Comments and feedback
To comment you authorise giscus with your GitHub account; your comment, username and avatar appear publicly on GitHub Discussions. You can edit or delete your comment on GitHub.
The Feedback form opens a GitHub Issue pre-filled with what you wrote; sending it is up to you, and a sent report is public. Please do not include personal information.
08Children
The site does no special processing of children’s data. GitHub’s age requirements apply to commenting.
09If you create an account
Signing in is optional. When you sign in with Google, X, Apple or GitHub, the name, profile photo address and email address that service gives us, and which service you used, are stored on Supabase (a database service based in the USA).
Your likes and reposts with notes are saved to your account; reposts appear publicly in the Feed with your name and photo. Like counts are public; who liked is not shown.
Your session is kept in your browser’s local storage. Delete your account at any time with “Delete account” on your profile or in the account menu; your profile, likes and reposts go with it.
10Changes
This policy may change; the current version is always on this page.
