The Sky This Week from October 30 to November 6: The Moon jockeys with Jupiter and Mars

Autumn Skies Host a Parade of Planets

The week spanning October 30 to November 6 offers skywatchers a captivating series of planetary encounters across the night sky. Crisp autumn nights provide ideal viewing conditions to observe the Moon as it jockeys for position alongside prominent outer planets, specifically Jupiter and Mars. This changing configuration offers a rewarding display visible to both naked-eye observers and backyard astronomers utilizing binoculars or modest telescopes.

Guiding by Saturn and the Circlet of Pisces

Observing opportunities begin on Friday, October 30, before moonrise, when skygazers are encouraged to locate the renowned Circlet asterism within the constellation Pisces. Locating this delicate arrangement of stars is made straightforward by first spotting Saturn, the most luminous beacon in that sector of the sky. Standing approximately 30 degrees above the southeastern horizon around 8 P.M. local time, Saturn acts as an unmistakable celestial landmark.

Illuminating Orbital Mechanics Across the Ecliptic

Tracking the lunar progression relative to Jupiter and Mars throughout the week provides an intuitive visualization of the ecliptic plane, the orbital highway of our solar system. Jupiter's brilliant disc and the distinct ruddy hue of Mars serve as superb targets for astrophotographers and educators. Modest optical equipment will also allow observers to resolve Jupiter's four Galilean moons and catch atmospheric banding across the giant planet's disk during these conjunctions.
