Space debris: Are we on track for true sustainability? (op-ed)

The Importance of Space in Modern Life

Space has become a critical infrastructure layer underpinning nearly all communication, navigation, and observation systems that enable modern life today. The uninterrupted operation of these vital systems depends heavily on keeping the orbital environment secure.

Space Debris Threat and Orbital Cleanliness

The increasing accumulation of human-made debris in Earth orbit poses severe risks to active satellites and future missions. Maintaining a safe and clean orbital space requires the strict implementation of technical standards and operational safeguards.

Future Sustainability and Planetary Responsibility

Achieving true orbital sustainability is essential to safeguard the future of space infrastructure. Preserving a clean orbital environment will be a decisive factor for the success and safety of all upcoming scientific and commercial space missions.
