Technology preparations are underway for the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO), the top-priority large space mission from the Astro2020 Decadal Survey. A call for proposals has been issued to mature UV and VIS technologies.

Astro2020 Priority Mission: Habitable Worlds Observatory

A new phase has begun for the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO), recommended as the highest-priority large space mission for implementation in 2023-2033 by the National Academies' Astro2020 Decadal Survey. HWO is envisioned as a flagship space observatory for future astronomical discoveries.

Developing UV and VIS Technologies

The HWO Technology Maturation Project Office (HTMPO) is tasked with advancing required technologies prior to full implementation. As part of this effort, the HWO UV-VIS Technology Maturation Study has been initiated, focusing on ultraviolet and visible light capability upgrades. Phase 1 proposals are due by 20 November 2026.

Foundations for Next-Generation Astronomy

Informed by community feedback and thorough evaluations of state-of-the-art technology, these maturation studies play a crucial role in preparing HWO for constructability. Maturing these optical and ultraviolet technologies will pave the way for the mission's implementation phase.
