NASA leadership announced an updated framework to return American astronauts to the lunar surface in 2028, including an Artemis III test flight sending four astronauts to low Earth orbit next year.

Updated Path to the Moon

NASA has unveiled accelerated strategic plans for its Artemis lunar exploration campaign. During a briefing on Friday, Oct. 23, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman alongside senior agency leaders detailed the pathway designed to return American astronauts to the lunar surface by 2028.

Artemis III to Test Critical Hardware in Orbit

A central component of the updated architecture involves the Artemis III flight. Under this plan, a crew of four astronauts will travel to low Earth orbit next year. The primary objective will be testing and validating critical flight systems, mission hardware, and operational protocols required for downstream lunar landings.

De-risking the 2028 Lunar Landing

By validating essential systems in the accessible environment of low Earth orbit first, NASA aims to substantially reduce technical and operational risks. This milestone-driven approach lays the engineering groundwork required to achieve a safe, successful crewed landing on the Moon by 2028.
