NASA Study Refines Projections for Thwaites Glacier

Image: NASA Science

A NASA study reveals that Antarctica's Thwaites Glacier could contribute up to twice as much to sea level rise by the end of the century than previously projected by models.

NASA's Modeling of Thwaites Glacier

A study from NASA researchers has refined our understanding of the stability and trajectory of Antarctica's massive Thwaites Glacier. Long monitored as a pivotal driver of global sea level adjustments, the glacier's dynamics were subjected to updated numerical models informed by ongoing polar observations.

Simulation Results Point to Doubled Contributions

The updated model simulations suggest that Thwaites Glacier could contribute significantly more to rising sea levels by the close of the century than previous scientific estimates indicated. In select simulations, the glacier's projected contribution reached as much as twice the rate anticipated by earlier mainstream models.

Global Consequences for Coastal Zones and Climate Projections

These findings underscore the critical vulnerability of global coastal regions to accelerated Antarctic ice loss. Because Thwaites Glacier acts as a structural keystone for the broader West Antarctic Ice Sheet, its accelerated retreat could trigger far-reaching oceanic and climatic feedback loops worldwide.
