Having traveled over 2.2 billion miles since its launch on Oct. 16, 2021, NASA's Lucy has become the first spacecraft to reach the region of primitive solar system bodies known as the Jupiter Trojan asteroids.

The Historic Journey and Arrival of the Lucy Mission

Launched by NASA on October 16, 2021, the Lucy spacecraft has achieved a major milestone in space exploration. Following a nearly five-year journey, the spacecraft has officially entered the region populated by primitive solar system bodies known as the Jupiter Trojan asteroids.

Orbital Distance and Technical Details

Having covered more than 2.2 billion miles since launch, Lucy is the very first spacecraft to enter this uncharted territory of the solar system. The mission is designed to gather key data from these unique Trojan asteroids that orbit the Sun along the same path as Jupiter.

Unlocking the Early History of the Solar System

Trojan asteroids are considered primitive remnants from the formation of our planetary system. Lucy's arrival in this region opens new possibilities for studying the building blocks of planets and gaining deeper insights into the physical conditions of the early solar system.
