Mannequins aboard the Orion spacecraft during Artemis I successfully tracked deep space radiation levels. Lithium-based glowing salt crystals helped map the radiation exposure during the uncrewed lunar mission.

Radiation Experiments Aboard the Orion Spacecraft

During NASA's uncrewed Artemis I mission around the Moon, two anthropomorphic mannequins designed to mimic human bone and soft tissue occupied the seats inside the Orion spacecraft. As part of the Matroshka AstroRad Radiation Experiment, hundreds of sensors were distributed throughout their bodies.

Lithium Crystals and Technical Measurements

A research team led by Paweł Bilski from the Institute for Nuclear Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences published their findings in the journal Radiation Measurements. The study highlights the performance of a new type of long-term passive radiation monitor made of lithium, utilizing glowing salt crystals to track cosmic exposure.

Impact on Future Human Spaceflight

The resulting data allows scientists to model exact radiation absorption across different human tissues during deep space travel. These insights will directly aid in designing better protective shielding and safety protocols for astronauts on upcoming crewed Artemis lunar missions.
