The Next Step in Ultraviolet Astronomy
NASA has officially committed to the development and launch of a powerful new ultraviolet space observatory known as the UltraViolet EXplorer, or UVEX. Scheduled for liftoff in 2031, the mission is designed to provide unprecedented insights into the ultraviolet cosmos and revitalize high-energy astronomical surveys.
Surpassing GALEX with Unprecedented Sensitivity
UVEX will be roughly 100 times more powerful than its predecessor, GALEX, whose trailblazing mission concluded in 2013. Thanks to advanced optics and detector technology, UVEX will deliver wide-field ultraviolet surveys capable of capturing transient events, mapping massive stellar nurseries, and tracing the evolutionary pathways of diverse galactic populations across cosmic time.
Complementing Modern Infrared Surveys
The ultraviolet survey conducted by UVEX is structured to seamlessly complement ongoing and future infrared surveys performed by other major space telescopes. By bridging the gap between ultraviolet emission and infrared observations, scientists will gain a comprehensive view of star formation, energetic phenomena, and cosmic structures throughout the universe.
