U.K. startup Shield Space is adapting lessons from drone warfare in Ukraine to orbital defense. The company aims to develop swarms of up to 100 autonomous, laser-equipped cubesats to protect Western satellites.

From Battlefield Drones to Orbital Defense

U.K.-based startup Shield Space has launched an ambitious initiative to apply lessons learned from drone warfare in Ukraine to space security. The company is designing swarms of autonomous satellites to safeguard critical Western orbital assets against potential space-based threats.

Laser Armaments and Autonomous Swarm Operations

The proposed defense system is built upon a fleet structure containing up to 100 miniaturized cubesats. These satellites will be equipped with autonomous software capable of making independent operational decisions in orbit, alongside laser systems designed to neutralize potential hazards when necessary.

A New Era in Space Asset Protection

As the strategic value of both commercial and military orbital assets continues to rise rapidly, satellite defense systems are becoming central to space security policy. This project demonstrates the critical role that autonomous swarm technologies could play in securing vital orbital infrastructure in the coming years.
