Continuous Improvement gains momentum at CERN

Launched in January by the Continuous Improvement Team, CERN's CERNidée portal allows staff to share process enhancement ideas. Averaging over one submission per working day in early 2026, it is streamlining operations.

Fostering a Culture of Continuous Improvement

The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) has introduced new initiatives aimed at optimizing its administrative and operational workflows alongside its core scientific missions. In January, the Continuous Improvement (CI) Team officially launched the CERNidée portal, providing the CERN community with a direct platform to submit suggestions for simplifying processes, improving internal services, and eliminating recurring obstacles in everyday work.

The initiative emphasizes empowering researchers, engineers, and administrative staff to take an active role in workplace problem-solving. By directly sourcing feedback from personnel engaged in diverse daily tasks, the organization aims to enhance organizational agility and responsiveness across all operational divisions.

High Engagement Metrics and Idea Implementation

The CERNidée platform has demonstrated steady traction across the research institution. Data from the first half of 2026 indicates that suggestions were submitted at an average rate of more than one proposal per CERN working day. This high volume of input reflects substantial engagement across the international community working at the facility.

The continuous improvement framework focuses on actively converting these community proposals into tangible operational changes. Rather than serving merely as a passive feedback box, the process involves screening, developing, and executing actionable ideas to steadily refine support structures and operational efficiency.

Implications for Long-Term Research Infrastructure

For an institution operating complex scientific infrastructure such as particle colliders and vast computing networks, lean and efficient operational support is essential. Streamlining workflows and removing procedural bottlenecks allows personnel to focus resources more effectively on core experimental research and development activities.

CERN intends to maintain momentum within the Continuous Improvement program, utilizing these regular operational adjustments to support its long-term scientific objectives. The continuous refinement of daily practices ensures that large-scale collaborative physics research is underpinned by efficient organizational support.
