A New Drilling Campaign Begins on Mars
According to planning data reported by Lucy Lim, a planetary scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, the Curiosity rover continues its exploration on Mars. Following the completion of the Basque Lakes drilling campaign, the rover returned to a location just a few meters from the Chiu Chiu block.
Observation Details and Target Selection
Initial assessments revealed that the Chiu Chiu block was not a suitable candidate for drilling. Consequently, during the Sol 5043-5049 planning cycle, the science team shifted focus to the Nazca target to prepare for the upcoming drilling operations.
Future Steps of the Scientific Mission
Following instrument preparation and field verification, this new drill campaign aims to deliver key sample data regarding the geological history of the Red Planet. Curiosity's upcoming analyses will contribute to understanding the origin of local rock layers.
