NASA, along with commercial partners Blue Origin and SpaceX, has streamlined lander designs and revised operational concepts to accelerate human landing missions targeted for 2028.

Optimizing Landers for Sustainable Lunar Presence

As NASA advances plans to return humans to the lunar surface and build sustained infrastructure, the agency is refining its Human Landing System (HLS) framework. Working in partnership with Blue Origin and SpaceX, NASA has streamlined the architecture and operational concepts for upcoming crewed lunar landing vehicles.

Streamlined Architecture and Operations

Since the initial contracts were awarded, both commercial providers and NASA engineers have updated vehicle configurations to reduce operational complexity. The revisions focus on streamlining engineering designs and modifying concept of operations, ensuring enhanced mission reliability and execution efficiency during lunar transit and touchdown.

Paving the Way for 2028 Missions

These accelerated development pipelines support targeted lunar operations by 2028 and beyond. By solidifying commercial lander architectures today, NASA and its partners aim to maintain a robust, repeatable pipeline of crewed missions that support long-term lunar exploration and eventual deep-space transit architectures.
