The California Nebula and Its Features
Andrei Pleskatsevich from Minsk, Belarus, successfully captured a detailed image of the California Nebula (NGC 1499) in the constellation Perseus. Located between 1,000 and 1,500 light-years away from Earth, this celestial object spans a glowing cloud of hydrogen gas roughly 2.5 degrees long.
Observation Details and Emission Mechanism
The brightness of the nebula is driven by the nearby hot star Xi Persei. Intense ultraviolet light emitted from this star energizes the surrounding hydrogen gas, causing the nebula to glow vividly against space.
Technical Equipment and Exposure Times
To capture this stunning image, the astrophotographer utilized a 3-inch f/4.5 refractor telescope equipped with a quad-band filter and a one-shot color camera. A total exposure time of 8⅓ hours was required to reveal the detailed structure of the cloud.
