A New Journey to the Mysterious Martian Moon
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has launched the Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) spacecraft, marking a crucial milestone in planetary exploration. The primary objective of the mission is to study Phobos, the larger of Mars' two natural satellites, and return physical samples back to Earth.
Sample Collection and Operational Phases
Upon arriving at the Martian system, MMX will conduct close-up scientific observations and map the surface composition of Phobos. The probe is engineered to touch down on the surface to gather pristine regolith samples and safely transport them to Earth inside a specialized return capsule.
Decoding the History of the Solar System
Scientists have long debated whether Phobos is a captured asteroid or the remnant of an ancient giant impact on Mars. Analyzing pristine laboratory samples returned by MMX will offer definitive clues regarding the origin of Martian moons and the geochemical evolution of the early Solar System.
